Fall Talks Huge Success
Fall talks at six Maine libraries and historical societies ended on November 9 with a presentation at the Raymond Village Library. Jon Bernhard brought a crate of homing pigeons for the audience to see. Everyone enjoyed meeting real homing pigeons, birds of military legend and honor.

Here’s what Rachel Holden, the Adult Services Librarian, said about the program:
“We were immensely lucky to have Maine author Elizabeth Macalaster present her program “War Pigeons: They Got Their Messages Through,” an informative and engaging presentation on the history of homing pigeons utilized for communication purposes by the U.S. Military during wartime. It was a wonderful lead-up to Veterans Day, and an opportunity to celebrate these winged heroes! As a special surprise, Elizabeth was joined by her friend Jon Bernhard, a homing pigeon expert, who brought in several of his own pigeons to visit with attendees! It was a very enjoyable and fascinating program, and we all went home with a higher appreciation for the humble pigeon! RVL wants to extend a huge thank you to Elizabeth and Jon for providing such a fantastic event at the library!”
